Dark is after two young boys from the town in particular, while others in the town would certainly be easy marks. The sour- faced, older schoolteacher (Mary Grace Canfield) wants to be a seductive young woman, Ed the bartender (James Stacy) would like to regain his lost left arm and leg, and the librarian (Jason Robards) worries about a wasted life spent only in books. Dark works his own brand of voodoo, the citizens and the two boys - - as well as the whole carnival itself - - approach a final reckoning. Something Wicked This Way Comes was based on a Ray Bradbury novel. Something Wicked This Way Comes (film)Something Wicked This Way Comes is a 1. American horrorfantasy film directed by Jack Clayton and produced by Walt Disney Productions from a screenplay written by Ray Bradbury, based on his novel of the same name. Disney has set in motion a Something Wicked This Way Comes. Clayton wanted something more. The novel's title was taken directly from a line in Act IV of William Shakespeare's. Macbeth: . It was shot in Vermont and at the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California. The film had a troubled production . When the boys hear about a strange traveling carnival, Mr. Dark's Pandemonium Carnival, from a lightning- rod salesman, they decide to see what it is all about, but Will is fearful, as most carnivals end their tours after Labor Day. Dark, the Illustrated Man, rides into town on a dark midnight, setting up his massive carnival in a matter of seconds, the boys are both thrilled and terrified. It seems to be just another carnival at first, but it is not long before the forces of darkness begin to manifest from the haunting melodies of the carousel . With his collection of freaks and oddities, Dark intends to take control of the town and seize more innocent souls to damn. It will take all the wit and hope of the two boys to save their families and friends, with aid from an unlikely ally, Will's father, the town librarian, who understands more than anyone else that . Financing for the project never came, and Bradbury converted the screenplay into a novel, published in 1. He and director Jack Clayton, whom Bradbury had previously worked with on Moby Dick, produced a completed script. The movie was intended to be produced by Kirk Douglas' Bryna Productions, and Douglas was to have starred in it. However, production never began and the film was eventually put into turnaround. At various times, Sam Peckinpah and Steven Spielberg expressed interest in making the film. After the success of family- oriented fantasy pictures by competing studios, such as Time Bandits and The Dark Crystal, Disney decided to purchase the adaptation's rights and hired Bradbury to produce a new script from scratch. In a 1. 98. 1 issue of Cinefantastique, Bradbury stated that his top choices to play Mr. Dark were Peter O'Toole and Christopher Lee. However, Disney decided to go with a relatively unknown actor instead in order to keep the budget down, and Jonathan Pryce was eventually cast. As the film progressed, two differing visions emerged for the film, with Bradbury and Clayton wishing to stay as faithful to the novel as possible, while Disney wanted to make a more accessible and family friendly film. Bradbury and Clayton fell out during production after Bradbury discovered that Clayton had hired writer John Mortimer to do an uncredited revision of Bradbury's screenplay at the studio's insistence. Although he had blonde hair at the time, and co- star Vidal Petersen had dark hair, Carson's hair was dyed jet black and Petersen's was dyed blonde to fit the new casting. A soundtrack album of Delerue's unused score was released by Intrada Records in 2. He recalled in 2. Clayton submitted his original cut, Disney expressed concerns about the film's length, pacing and commercial appeal; the studio then took the project out of Clayton's hands and undertook an expensive six- month reshoot and re- edit. Nelson was let go for budgetary reasons, and although Gordon was originally prepared to follow Nelson and leave the production, Nelson encouraged him to stay, and Gordon edited the final cut (resulting in the film's dual editor credits). Disney spent an additional $5 million on re- filming, re- editing, and re- scoring the picture, and Gordon was required to make a number of changes to Clayton and Nelson's original cut, removing several major special- effects scenes, and incorporating the new material (directed by Leo Dyer), including a new spoken prologue, narrated by Arthur Hill. Among the casualties was a groundbreaking animation scene, which would have been one of the first major uses of computer- generated imaging in a Hollywood film; combining the then new technology of CGI with traditional animation, it depicted Dark's circus train rolling into town, and the carnival magically materialising . The deleted scene was previewed in detail in the May. Another cut sequence depicted Mr Dark using his sinister powers to send a huge disembodied hand to reach into the house to grab the boys . This was shot using real spiders, and years later Shawn Carson recalled the considerable discomfort he and Vidal Petersen experienced as a result being exposed to the irritating urticating hairs of the 2. The original themes of Bradbury's novel, the suggestion of menace, the autumn atmosphere of an American Midwest township and the human relationships between characters that attracted Clayton escaped preview audiences completely with Clayton heavily criticized. New special effects sequences were shot and a hastily composed new score by composer James Horner replaced Delerue's original music. Bradbury's prose is a strange hybrid of craftsmanship and lyricism. He builds his stories and novels in a straightforward way, with strong plotting, but his sentences owe more to Thomas Wolfe than to the pulp tradition, and the lyricism isn't missed in this movie. In its descriptions of autumn days, in its heartfelt conversations between a father and a son, in the unabashed romanticism of its evil carnival and even in the perfect rhythm of its title, this is a horror movie with elegance. So it's a happy surprise when the film.. Bradbury's novel than it is here, as directed by Jack Clayton. Clayton, who directed a widely admired version of The Turn of the Screw some years ago, gives the film a tension that transcends even its purplest prose. The film was also nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation and Grand Jury Prize at the Avoriaz Fantastic Film Festival. Disney is working on a remake of Something Wicked This Way Comes with Seth Grahame- Smith writing the script, making his directorial debut, and producing with David Katzenberg from their producing banner Katz. Smith Productions. Reportedly, Grahame- Smith wants to focus mostly on Ray Bradbury's source material from the book. The Bradbury Chronicles: The Life of Ray Bradbury. New York: William Morrow. Breaking Bad has been critcally acclaimed as one of the best shows on television. I saw the first season, and was blown away and finally got around to watching back- to- back Seasons 2 and 3. I was as addicted as a meth addict with the stories and characters, including the brilliant performances of Bryan Cranston playing Walter White and Aaron Paul playing Jesse Pinkman. It is one of the most consistently well made shows on television. The acting is great and is supported by magnificent lighting and cinematography, matched by ballsy writing and directing. A majority of all the seasons have great episodes that are all worth watching, but below is a list of in my opinon, the ten best episodes the show has to offer. Best Episode Ever # 10: . Many of the characters evolve greatly throughout all the seasons of this show, but it is the pilot that perfectly laid the ground- work for the whole show, even though the characters changed, they are all still the same people that we first saw in this episode. I don’t like watching the pilots of TV shows because they usually drastically change storyor characters but overall, this is a episode that pushes us head- first into the world of the show and what it’s about and we as the audience never look back. With more government focus on the war on drugs than ever, Breaking Bad humanized the other side of the law in a way the media landscape had. The American Film Institute listed Breaking Bad as one of the top ten television series of. Top 10 Breaking Bad Episodes. Those last 10 minutes were completely worth it. Walter has been known to be obsessive in dealing with his emotion, and this episode is dealing with the aftermath of Walter’s health news, and forces him to act out and confront Hank at a family party after getting Walter Jr. Walter then becomes obsessed with home improvements including, some rotting and a new water heater. While, the episode is a great peak inside the mind of Walter, who now has to come to terms with his time being a meth cook, now in remission. Most of us were left scratching our heads wondering where the show would go, now that Walter no longer has the same motivations for cooking. After he sees a junkie buying meth equipment at a hardware store, a light flickers on in Walt’s mind and he finally comes to terms with who he has now become. He’s Heisenberg persona was created with an expiration date, but upon the health news, he has no choice but to embrace what he has become. He walks to the parking lot and tells a large, bulky drug dealer to get out of his territory. The conviction behind Bryan Cranston’s eyes is what really sells the moment and is a standing ovation scene of Awesomeness. TV on the Radio in the background doesn’t hurt either. Crazy Handful of Nothin’ Season 1: Episode 6. This show is filled with great little badass moments and in Season 1, this was one of the most unexpected, fist- pumping scenes I’ve seen on Television period. Walter White creates the Heisenberg persona, and confronts Tuco who Walt and Jesse seek to be business partners with, but pushes around Jesse and took their money. Walt, now into his treatments, walks into Tuco’s office and in one moment turns the tables in his favor, and stands up as a force to be reckoned with. The single moment where Walt drops the explosive piece of crystal meth is a Holy F**k moment, where we are just as caught off guard as Tuco. One of the best qualities of the show is that we are can easily relate to Walter White’s mild mannered persona, but he reminds us of how far we, as humans can go when pushed to our limits and have nothing to lose. ABQ Season 2: Episode 1. The season 2 finale of Breaking Bad was building up from the start of the season, showing flash- forwards of a Hazmat team at the White’s house, and picking up and bagging debris, including a pink teddy bear, Walt’s glasses, and dead bodies. It finally culminates in a slow- burn where Jesse’s drug habits lead him to taking the blame for Jane’s death, Jane’s father becoming emotionally distressed in a small role that packs some emotional power, and Walt finally comes to terms with who he is. The episode doesn’t really put our main characters in danger, but in a better way results in the pressure cooker of the entire season bubbling up and. Walter and Skylar finally confront each other about Walt’s lies and Anna Gunn has a brilliant performance where she lays all her cards on the table leaving Walter speechless. Even if he told the truth, how can she now separate truth from fiction? In a great moment she says she is scared of what she’d learn even if. An airline disaster then occurs because of Jane’s father working while still grief- stricken and makes a. A powerful metaphor in a finale to a great season. The finale didn’t have a plot point with a cliffhanger but left us wondering “where do we go from here?”7. Peekaboo Season 2: Episode 6“Peekaboo” is a powerful season two episode that leaves a lasting impact for the entire series. Jesse is forced by Walt to confront two meth- heads who robbed one of their dealers, and Walt is confronted by Gretchen, whom Walt claimed was helping pay for cancer treatments. The contrast between the two stories is seamless and stomach- churning for both characters when they’re backed into corners. Walt is finally forced to face one of his longtime lies, and instead of begging and pleading to Gretchen, it turns into Walt tearing her apart verbally, with all his pent up resentment towards her and her husband. It’s a tough scene, with the right mix of rage and sincerity, that ends up in one of the best on- screen “Fuck you’s” ever filmed. Jesse’s situation is more suspenseful as the power shifts between him and the meth- heads especially when a stolen ATM gets involved in the mix. The ATM death scene is one of those moments where you know the show is gonna go that far, but you still jump up to stop the ATM from being pushed over, just as Jesse does. To get that emotionally invested in a simple scene, is a rare television feat. The real heart of the episode is Jesse’s relationship with the Meth head’s son, who he sort of sees himself in. Jesse can’t relate to the living conditions and nonexistent parents, but he can relate to the loneliness and neglect. Jesse’s treatment of the child and line of telling him “Have a good life” is one of the strongest character moments for Aaron Paul’s character. Grilled Season 2: Episode 2. While most shows, would save a moment and episode like this for the climax, Breaking Bad started a fantastic second season with an finger biting scene of suspense and drama. Tuco, on the run kidnaps Walt and Jesse bringing them to his hideout holding them captive, and tells them they’re running away to Mexico. Jesse and Walt, humor the drugged- out Tuco, whom they planned to kill with a poisonous, untraceable bean. The episode becomes a chess match between Walt and Jesse racing against the clock to murder Tuco, while being watched by Tuco’s grandfather, whom is wheelchair bound, and uses a hotel front desk bell and his only voice of communication. The episode is a great example of a minimalist story and scene stretched out to great effect. The scenes where Walt and Jesse try to trick Tuco, are some of the best scenes of Walt and Jesse working together with unbearable tension. While Walt is missing, his family assumes he has runaway, which forces Hank to track down Jesse Pinkman and leads him straight to Tuco, which forces them to stand- off with one another. This well- shot scene using the sounds of the old man’s bell, and the hydraulics of Jesse’s car amp up the tension to it’s fantastic conclusion, and one of the most memorable Season 2 moments. Half Measures Season 3: Episode 1. I was getting a little anxious during season three, especially after the“Fly” episode but Half Measures finally summed up all the critical raves I heard about this season. Jesse wants to murder two dealers, who hired a young kid to murder his friend “Combo” and is the son of his new love interest. Is Jesse legitimately upset and seeking vengeance or is he? Walt contacts Gus who tries to resolve the situation in a scene that feels like bullies being sent to the principal’s office. Johnathan Banks, who also has a small supporting role as Mike “The Fixer”. The episode, sticks to the same plots like the money laundering dilemma between Skylar and Walt, and Hank and Marie in the hospital, but what the scene is best for is the “Run.” scene. Walt intervenes in a deadly situation for Jesse and saves his life, in one of the most jaw- dropping unexpected moments in the show’s history and is the final piece in the transformation of Walter White. Phoenix Season 2: Episode 1. Although I listed ABQ, the season two finale already, the second to last episode is what lays the groundwork of the downfalls of the major characters on the show. Walter finally sees his baby girl, he makes the million dollar sale, and tries to control Jesse, by holding onto his money. Jesse and Jane, have now fallen deep into their addictions while panic sets in when they are caught by Jane’s father played by John de Lancie, who deserves an award for this episode. His frustrations and worries for Jane finally barrel up into threatening to call the police unless Jane leaves Jesse and goes to rehab. Jane and Jesse try to blackmail Walt to get Jesse’s share of the money and they can runaway. Jane was an interesting character that balanced with Jesse, but was always at heart, a loose cannon, that was toxic for Jesse’s character and his addictions. Walt, on top of the world is still worried about Jesse after giving him the money. He goes to a bar and unknowingly speaks to Jane’s father and discuss how you can’t give up on family in a wonderfully simple scene. In an ironic twist, Walter goes to Jesse to talk to him, bumps Jane and causes her to choke on her own vomit, Walter stands and watches her die in a devastating scene. How can you not get choked up seeing Walt tear up as she lays dead in front of him? The Definitive Ranking Of All 3. Breaking Bad Characters. This list didn’t come easy. Anyone who’s seen even a minute of Breaking Bad will know how mind- bendingly awesome it is, but a good show is only as good as its characters. And there are loads of great characters in Breaking Bad. So – what criteria have I actually used to rank them? I’m not even sure I know, but if pressed I’d say it’s the ones that made the biggest impact – not always the ones I liked the most, but the ones that have stayed with me – that have come out on top. Oh, and two more quick things before we get started: 1. There are some minor characters who don’t make this list (these tend to be the functional ones that don’t really have much depth or definable character). So if you’re reading this and you’re that ginger bloke who played the character that works for Saul whose name I can’t remember. There are horrible, horrible spoilers everywhere from now on. If you haven’t seen every episode of Breaking Bad, stop reading this now. Only one device can stream Amazon Music at a time. Click Continue to start streaming music on this device instead.". Thus in this article, the reader will be introduced to the basics of NN, alongside with the prediction pattern that can be successfully used in different types of . Specifically, a financial predictor based upon neural networks will be explored. During my intellectual trip into the world of artificial intelligence, I was fascinated how . The most exciting domain of prediction lies in the field of financial market. An investment strategy based on computer intelligence sounds like a very prominent and interesting field of study. Next, I'm going to describe a relatively simple program which will attempt to predict S& P5. DOW, NASDAQ Composite indexes, and Prime Interest Rate, according to the input data which will be described shortly. Before going into details, I would like to warn you that the entire article is written for educational purposes, thus the described application cannot be used in real- world scenario. The data that will be feed to neural network at the input, represents historical data of the S& P5. DOW, NASDAQ Composite and Prime Interest Rate. In general terms, these are leading indicators of stock market activity, which have a common fluctuation pattern. The S& P5. 00 is a free- float capitalization- weighted index published since 1. United States. The stocks included in the S& P5. American stock market companies; the NYSE Euronext and the NASDAQ OMX. Actually, the S& P5. American stocks. It is considered a bellwether for the American economy, and is included in the Index of Leading Indicators. S& P5. 00 index fluctuations are dependent upon a lot of factors, thus the entire prediction pattern is very complex. In this application, the input data is represented only by historical items of 4 important economical indicators. It is essential to mention that if you want a better predictor, you should feed your neural network with more indicators that are more or less important for the entire interpolation. As you can see in Figure 1, the value of the S& P5. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA), also referred to as the Industrial Average, the Dow Jones, the Dow 3. Dow, is a stock market index, and one of several indices created by Wall Street Journal editor and Dow Jones & Company co- founder Charles Dow. It is an index that shows how 3. United States have traded during a standard trading session in the stock market. Along with the NASDAQ Composite, the S& P5. Index, and the Russell 2. Index, the Dow is among the most closely watched benchmark indices tracking targeted stock market activity. To calculate the DJIA, the sum of the prices of all 3. Divisor, the Dow Divisor. The divisor is adjusted in case of stock splits, spinoffs or similar structural changes, to ensure that such events do not in themselves alter the numerical value of the DJIA. The NASDAQ Composite is a stock market index of the common stocks and similar securities listed on the NASDAQ stock market, meaning that it has over 3,0. It is highly followed in the U. S. Prime rate, or Prime Lending Rate, is a term applied in many countries to a reference interest rate used by banks. The term originally indicated the rate of interest at which banks lent to favored customers, i. Some variable interest rates may be expressed as a percentage above or below prime rate. Generally, prime interest rate is a significant determinant in the world of financial marketing. This is because monetary policy is aimed at influencing domestic interest rates, which drive currency rates relative to other currencies with different interest rates. Domestic interest rates also influence overall economic activity, with lower interest rates typically stimulating borrowing, investment, and consumption, while higher interest rates tend to reduce borrowing, and increase saving over consumption. Below is shown Federal Funds Rate History graph. This data will be used in the current application. Neural networks have been used with computers since the 1. Through the years, many different models have been presented. The perceptron is one of the earliest neural networks. It was an attempt to understand human memory, learning and cognitive processes. To construct a computer capable of . However, the human brain as a whole is far too complex to model. Rather, the individual cells that make up the human brain are studied. Following is introduced the schema of the most used artificial neural network. For the task of predicting the indexes, we'll be using the so called multilayer feed forward network which is the best choice for this type of application. In a feed forward neural network, neurons are only connected forward. Each layer of the neural network contains connections to the next layer, but there are no connections back. Typically, the network consists of a set of sensory units (source nodes) that constitute the input layer, one or more hidden layers of computation nodes, and an output layer of computation nodes. In its common use, most neural networks will have one hidden layer, and it's very rare for a neural network to have more than two hidden layers. The input signal propagates through the network in a forward direction, on a layer by layer basis. These neural networks are commonly referred as multilayer perceptrons (MLPs). Shown below is a simple MLP with 4 inputs, 1 output, and 1 hidden layer. The input layer is the conduit through which the external environment presents a pattern to the neural network. Once a pattern is presented to the input layer, the output layer will produce another pattern. In essence, this is all the neural network does - it matches the input pattern to one which best fits the training's output. It is important to remember that the inputs to the neural network are floating point numbers, represented as C# double type (most of the time you'll be limited to this type). The output layer of the neural network is what actually presents a pattern to the external environment (the result of the computation). The number of output neurons should be directly related to the type of work that the neural network is to perform. There are really two decisions that must be made regarding the hidden layers: how many hidden layers to actually have in the network and how many neurons will be in each of these layers. Problems that require two hidden layers are rarely encountered. There is currently no theoretical reason to use neural networks with any more than two hidden layers, thus almost all current problems solved by neural networks are fine with just one hidden layer. Even though the hidden layers do not directly interact with the external environment, they have a tremendous influence on the final output, thus you should carefully choose the number of neurons within it. Using too few neurons in the hidden layers will result in so called . There are many rule- of- thumb methods for determining the correct number of neurons to use in the hidden layers, here are just a few of them: The number of hidden neurons should be between the size of the input layer and the size of the output layer. The number of hidden neurons should be 2/3 the size of the input layer plus the size of the output layer. The number of hidden neurons should be less than twice the size of the input layer. Multilayer perceptrons have been applied successfully to solve some difficult and diverse problems, by training them in a supervised manner with a highly popular algorithm known as the error back- propagation algorithm (described further). Please note that in our application, we will be using the Resilient propagation algorithm, which is very similar to back- propagation. The neural network itself will be composed from neurons (main information- processing units as neurons within a human brain) of the same kind, placed within different layers. They will exhibit the same characteristics; hence if you understand how one neuron is designed you will not have problems in understanding how the entire network works. Generally, the model of a neuron can be summarized in the following block diagram: One can see that there are 3 basic element of a neuronal model: A set of synapses or connecting links, each characterized by a weight or strength of its own: X< sub> 1< /sub> ,X< sub> 2< /sub>..,X< sub> n< /sub> with corresponding weights: W< sub> k. W< sub> k. 1< /sub>..,W< sub> km< /sub>. As you will see further, the weights represent the . Their values will directly affect the output of the neural network. An adder for summing the input signals, weighted by the respective synapses of the neuron: V< sub> k< /sub> = . Simply speaking - the input signal X is multiplied by the weight W and summed in the adder with all the other items. The result of this summation V will go to the input of the activation function. An activation function for limiting the output of a neuron: Y< sub> k< /sub> = . The activation function has an important role in the schema of a neuron. It generates the output according to the summed input signals calculated in the adder. Summarized, the output signal of each neuron can be defined as follows: Y< sub> k< /sub> = . It is important to emphasize that if you want to use Back Propagation learning algorithm for training, then you should take care that your activation function is differentiable. This requirement comes from the fact that since this method requires computation of the Gradient of the error function at each iteration step, we must guarantee the continuity and differentiability of the error function. Machine Learning with Financial Time Series Data . Today, you have. more data at your disposal than ever, more sources of data, and more frequent. New sources include new exchanges, social media outlets. The frequency of delivery has increased from tens of messages. Most of the modern analysis techniques aren't different in the sense of. The growth in. available computing power is faster than the growth in time series volumes, so. In particular, machine learning techniques, especially deep learning, hold great.
